Back in March of 1681, King Charles the 2nd of Britain approved William Penn a charter to a parcel of land a little West of the Delaware River. The King referred to the region as Penn in honor of Williams father, and Penn the Junior later added sylvania, that means forested area. Overflowing with pacifist Quaker ideals, William Penn though of his colony as a divine experiment and ensured as its governor and property owner that its laws esteemed religious freedom and liberal governments. Penn chose Philadelphia as capital of Pennsylvania in the year 1682, boldly naming it after the Greek word that means brotherly love. After surviving the great fire of London in 1666, Penn designed the layout of Philadelphia in a gridlike pattern featuring widened streets, not the extremely narrow corridors of buildings in England that caused so much to be consumed by fire. The layout of Philadelphia was later copied as a basis formula for most cities in America. Philadelphia Pennsylvania grew quickly to become the 2nd biggest city after London in the English empire, before losing the title to New York, New York. English hostility became the leading principle in the colonies of the city, where colonial leaders would meet in preparation of their course of action. The result was the Declaration of Independence and in 1790 Philadelphia became the temporary capital of the new America prior to Washington DC. The US Constitution was written and first read publicly in Philadelphia in 1786. Often directed by the talented Benjamin Franklin, Philadelphia Pa. became the central figure in developments in the nation of arts and sciences. From 1793 to 1820, Philadelphia Pennsylvania had various major yellow fever epidemics that killed thousands and yet led to the creation of the first city water system in America. The fortune of Philadelphia declined during the nineteenth as New York began to take over as the countries cultural, commercial and industrial epicenter. Philadelphia never re gained the significance of its earlier years, notwithstanding Philadelphia continued it's cultural and educational innovations, commercial base and ship building, as well as a brief building boom shortly after World War II. During the mid 20th century, like many American cities, Philadelphia saw much of its middle-class leave Philly for the neighboring suburb regions. The 70s saw Philadelphia wrestle with inner-city tension, like the firefights between the police and the para-military MOVE group. However, by 1976, lavish plans for the nations bicentennial inspired a citywide concentrated effort of renovations and restorations that continue until the present. Today Philadelphia Pa is without a doubt one of the premier tourism destinations in worldwide polls for tourism and travel offerings.
